Bob Simkins, an Emerald Life Master, earned the DBAA/Unit 253's Sportsperson of the Year (SPOTY) for 2019. Roz Howell announced the winner during the Atlanta Fall SuperSectional Tournament.
Bob has played bridge in Atlanta for over 40 years. His partners and opponents alike consider him a highly-skilled bridge player and while always gracious and respectful.
Bob is also a popular part-time director. He maintains a friendly, pleasant demeanor at all times. When faced with tough decisions at the table, Bob strives to do what is correct and ethical. If an opponent or partner asks him a bridge question at the table, he will give them an easy-to-understand, and helpful answer, and often with a touch of humor.
Bob's a great partner and willing to adapt to his partner's convention preferences. We heard from many players that Bob makes the game of bridge more enjoyable for everyone.
When he is not playing or directing at the Atlanta Duplicate Bridge Center, you can find him competing in tournaments throughout the Southeast and NABCs.
Unit 253 recently selected Arlene Conway to become a member of the District 7 Goodwill Committee.Arlene exemplifies goodwill not only at the bridge table but through her contributions to players through teaching and mentoring. She genuinely cares about promoting bridge and helping less experienced players to improve their game.Congratulations to Arlene and many thanks for all that you do to give back to the game of bridge.
